How to Rebuild Energy After a Lingering Winter Bug
Over the last couple of weeks in the clinic, many clients coming in are just recovering from RSV. It's springtime in Perth, but our bodies are still transitioning from the cooler months to the warmer weather, leaving the immune system vulnerable. If you’re still feeling the drag of a lingering winter bug, the sudden shift to the new season can feel overwhelming, and many of us are finding our energy levels aren't quite matching the longer, brighter days. I am noticing the shift in my own energy levels, too. Even after a solid eight hours of sleep, my body seems to need a little extra time to wake up, despite the bright morning sun.
It’s tempting to try and force a quick recovery with a severe "spring detox," but restrictive approaches often do more harm than good when your body is already depleted. True vitality isn't built through deprivation; it’s built through consistent, supportive nourishment.

Why Energy Stays Low After Illness
When the worst of a winter bug is over, the body is still doing repair work. It has burned extra energy managing inflammation and clearing mucus. Coughing, poor sleep, reduced appetite, and a few days spent mostly resting can also leave muscles tight and energy stores low.
Feeling flat doesn't mean something is wrong—it simply means the body is still rebuilding. Recovery often needs a few calm, consistent weeks rather than one big, rapid fix.
Why Consistency Matters More Than Cleanses
After feeling unwell, it can be tempting to “reset” with a juice cleanse or skipped meals. These approaches can actually work against recovery, leaving your system running on fumes.
A better approach is simple: rebuild before you push. Aim for:
Three complete meals each day
Two small, nutrient-dense snacks if hunger or fatigue appears between meals
Plenty of fluids and gentle daily movement
Earlier nights where possible
A complete meal simply needs enough variety to support recovery. Try combining a protein (eggs, chicken, lentils), colourful plants (spinach, carrots, berries), complex carbohydrates (oats, brown rice), and healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts). This wholefood structure gives the body raw materials to repair while keeping meals satisfying.

Add colour: Spring produce like citrus, leafy greens, and berries provide vital micronutrients. Aim for two colours at lunch and dinner.
Don't fear carbohydrates: Oats, rice, and wholegrain bread provide accessible fuel. Pair them with protein and fats to keep your energy stable.
Support Tight Muscles After Coughing
A lingering respiratory bug affects more than just your airways. Prolonged coughing can tighten the chest, ribs, upper back, and neck. Spending extra time in bed can leave the lower back and hips feeling stiff.
Gentle soft tissue support helps the body feel less guarded. Try slow spinal rotations, gentle chest stretches, and warm showers.
Hydration also matters here. Muscles and connective tissues tend to feel worse when fluid intake has been low. Keep a water bottle nearby, especially if the cough is still hanging around or spring allergies are adding extra dryness.
