Spring has officially arrived in Perth, and I’ve already noticed my husband started to sneeze a bit every day! It’s that time of year when we really need to focus on supporting and balancing our immune systems.

In my clinic, I often see people struggling right now not just with seasonal hay fever, but with flare-ups of other reactive conditions like asthma, hives and eczema. It is so important to understand why our bodies are reacting this way, and more importantly, how to manage it.

I always remind my clients that managing these reactions isn’t about finding one magic cure or jumping into restrictive protocols. It’s about building gentle, sustainable daily habits that calm the immune response and keep things moving.


This guide focuses on natural hayfever relief through everyday wholefoods, quercetin-rich additions, simple manual sinus support, and spring-cleaning choices that reduce common indoor triggers.

Why spring allergies feel so draining


Seasonal allergies happen when the immune system treats harmless particles, such as pollen, as a threat. In response, immune cells release chemicals including histamine. Histamine helps create the familiar symptoms of hayfever, including:


  • sneezing

  • itchy or watery eyes

  • runny or blocked nose

  • post-nasal drip

  • sinus pressure

  • throat irritation

  • fatigue from poor sleep and constant congestion


The lining of the nose and sinuses, called the mucous membrane, can become swollen and irritated. Once that happens, mucus does not drain as easily. The lymphatic system, which helps clear fluid and immune waste, can also feel like it is moving slowly. That is when the face feels full, puffy, or heavy.

Quercetin is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid found in many fruits, vegetables, herbs, and teas. It is best known in allergy conversations because research suggests it may help stabilise mast cells.


Mast cells are immune cells that sit in tissues such as the nose, lungs, skin, and gut. When they meet a trigger such as pollen, they can release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. Supporting mast cell stability may help reduce the intensity of that response for some people.


Quercetin-rich foods include:


  • red and brown onions

Warm steam may help loosen mucus and soothe irritated nasal passages. Keep it comfortable, not hot. Avoid steam if it triggers asthma symptoms, dizziness, or skin irritation.


A warm shower can be easier and safer than leaning over a bowl. Breathe normally through the nose if possible, and stop if it feels uncomfortable.


Use saline rinses correctly


Saline sprays and rinses can help flush pollen and mucus from the nasal passages. If using a rinse bottle or neti pot, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water. Clean the device after each use and follow the product instructions.


Saline can be especially useful after being outdoors, gardening, exercising, or walking on windy days.


Keep fluids steady


Dehydration can make mucus thicker. Water, herbal tea, broths, and water-rich foods such as fruit and vegetables can help. Alcohol can worsen congestion for some people, and some people find wine or beer aggravates histamine symptoms.


Low-tox spring cleaning reduces indoor triggers


Outdoor pollen gets most of the attention, but indoor triggers can keep symptoms going. Dust mites, pet dander, mould, and strong cleaning fragrances can all irritate the nose and eyes.


A low-tox cleaning approach keeps the goal simple: remove allergens without adding harsh fumes that may bother sensitive airways.


Focus on dust mites first


Dust mites live in soft furnishings, bedding, carpets, and upholstered furniture. They thrive in warm, humid areas and feed on shed skin cells.


Helpful steps include:


  • Wash sheets, pillowcases, and doona covers weekly in hot water if the fabric allows.

  • Dry bedding fully in the sun where possible.

  • Use dust-mite covers on pillows and mattresses if dust is a major trigger.

  • Vacuum carpets and rugs with a HEPA filter if available.

  • Reduce clutter that collects dust, especially near the bed.

  • Damp-dust surfaces instead of dry dusting, which can push particles into the air.


If symptoms are worse on waking, the bedroom is the best place to start.


Manage pet dander gently


Pet dander can stick to fabric, bedding, rugs, and clothing. Regular cleaning can reduce the load without needing harsh products.


Try these habits:


  • Keep pets out of bedrooms during peak allergy season if practical.

  • Wash pet bedding often.

  • Brush pets outdoors where possible.

  • Vacuum sofas and rugs regularly.

  • Wash hands after close contact if eyes become itchy.


Pets are family, so the aim is usually reduction, not perfection.


Watch for mould and damp areas


Mould can irritate airways and worsen allergy-like symptoms. Check bathrooms, window frames, laundry areas, air-conditioner filters, and wardrobes near external walls.


Use ventilation where possible. Fix leaks promptly. For small surface mould, follow safe cleaning guidance and use protective gear if needed. For large, recurring, or hidden mould, get professional advice.
